If you want to sell a recorded workshop, Payhip is the better starting point for most cost-conscious creators who want a branded store and room to turn the replay into a mini-course. Gumroad is the better fit when fast built-in video streaming and worldwide sales-tax handling matter more than keeping platform fees low.
The choice is not simply “which platform has more features?” A $29 workshop replay has different needs from a structured $199 course. The right answer depends on how the buyer should watch the content, what happens after checkout, how much tax administration you want the platform to handle and whether the product may grow later.

Quick answer
Choose Payhip if you want:
- No monthly platform fee while testing demand.
- A lower direct-sale platform fee than Gumroad on the entry plan.
- A customizable storefront under your own branding.
- The option to sell the replay as a download or build it into a course.
- A store that can later include downloads, coaching, memberships and bundles.
Choose Gumroad if you want:
- A very fast setup for one video product.
- Built-in video streaming and a streaming-only option.
- Gumroad to act as Merchant of Record and handle indirect tax obligations worldwide.
- Native scheduled email workflows tied to purchases and subscriber behavior.
- A simple buyer library without building a traditional course area.
Our recommendation: Start with Payhip if your priority is testing a workshop replay at the lowest practical platform cost. Choose Gumroad if Merchant of Record coverage or its native streaming workflow saves you more time than the higher direct-sale fee costs you.

Payhip vs Gumroad for Workshop Replays: The Most Important Difference
Before comparing fees, decide what the customer should receive.
A downloadable replay
The buyer receives a video file, possibly with a workbook or slide deck. This is easy to build on both platforms, but large video downloads can be inconvenient on mobile connections and easier for buyers to redistribute.
Payhip allows digital-product files up to 5 GB per uploaded file. It also lets sellers set download limits and apply PDF stamping when the file meets Payhip’s requirements. Gumroad supplies unique download links, checks unusual download activity and can stamp PDFs.
Choose this format when ownership of a local copy is part of the offer and the video file is a reasonable size.
A protected streaming replay
The buyer signs in and watches without receiving the original video download.
Gumroad has the simpler path for this specific use case: upload the video and enable streaming-only access. Gumroad says uploaded videos are automatically prepared for 480p and 1080p streaming; higher-resolution uploads are reduced to 1080p.
Payhip can provide a more course-like viewing area, but native video hosting requires a separate monthly subscription for course and membership products. Alternatively, you can embed a video hosted elsewhere. That extra setup can be worthwhile if the replay will later include lessons, quizzes or progress tracking.
A mini-course built from the workshop
The recording is divided into modules and combined with downloads, exercises or bonus lessons.
This is where Payhip becomes the stronger fit. Its course product supports video and download lessons, drip scheduling, quizzes, assignments and completion certificates. Gumroad can deliver files, posts and video, but its structure is closer to a flexible digital product than a learning-management system.
If you already know the replay will become a multi-lesson product, start in Payhip rather than rebuilding it later.
Pricing: which platform costs less?
Payhip pricing
Payhip currently offers:
- Free: $0 per month plus a 5% Payhip transaction fee.
- Plus: $29 per month plus a 2% Payhip transaction fee.
- Pro: $99 per month with no Payhip transaction fee.
All three plans include Payhip’s core feature set. Stripe or PayPal processing fees still apply separately.
Gumroad pricing
Gumroad currently charges:
- Direct/profile sales: 10% + $0.50 per transaction.
- Discover marketplace sales: 30% per transaction.
- Monthly platform fee: none.
Gumroad presents its direct-sale charge as 10% + $0.50 per transaction and does not list an additional card-processing fee on its current pricing page. This differs from Payhip, where the Payhip transaction fee and the seller’s Stripe or PayPal processing fee are separate.
Fee example: selling a $29 workshop replay
| Sales volume | Gross revenue | Payhip Free charge | Gumroad direct-sale charge | Gap before Payhip processor fees |
| 1 sale | $29 | $1.45 + processor fee | $3.40 | $1.95 |
| 10 sales | $290 | $14.50 + processor fees | $34.00 | $19.50 |
| 50 sales | $1,450 | $72.50 + processor fees | $170.00 | $97.50 |
The table does not claim that Payhip leaves the full listed gap in your account. Payhip’s Stripe or PayPal charges still have to be deducted. At a $29 price, Payhip is cheaper whenever the processor charge is below $1.95 for that transaction. Your actual processor rate depends on the provider, country, payment method and currency.
This does not automatically make Payhip the better business decision. Gumroad’s higher fee partly pays for Merchant of Record administration and its simpler streaming workflow. If those features replace paid tools or hours of tax administration, Gumroad may still be the better value.
When should a Payhip seller upgrade?
The fee difference between Payhip Free and Plus is three percentage points. Ignoring processor charges, the approximate break-even point is:
$29 monthly fee ÷ 3% = about $967 in monthly sales
At a $29 product price, that is roughly 34 sales per month. Below that level, the Free plan generally costs less. Above it, Plus may reduce total platform costs.
The jump from Plus to Pro removes the remaining 2% Payhip fee but adds $70 per month. The approximate break-even point is $3,500 in monthly revenue, or about 121 sales of a $29 replay.
These are planning estimates, not a substitute for checking your actual payment-processing rate, refunds and tax treatment.
Course features and learning experience
A workshop replay does not automatically need an LMS. The course tools matter only when they improve the product you intend to sell.
| Learning feature | Payhip | Gumroad |
| Structured lessons | Yes | Content sections, but less LMS-focused |
| Quizzes | Yes | No dedicated quiz tool documented |
| Assignments | Yes | No dedicated assignment tool documented |
| Drip scheduling | Yes | Content and email scheduling, but not the same course workflow |
| Completion certificates | Yes | No native course certificate tool documented |
| Simple video plus workbook | Yes | Yes |
For one 60- to 90-minute replay, the missing LMS features may not matter. Gumroad can be the cleaner option when the complete offer is one streamed video and one workbook. Payhip becomes more valuable when you want to divide the recording into lessons, unlock modules gradually, add exercises or issue a certificate.
Do not choose Payhip merely because it has more course features. Choose it when you expect to use them. Do not choose Gumroad merely because it is faster to launch if you already know the product will become a structured course.
Product Setup and Workshop Delivery
A workshop replay needs more than a payment button. Buyers should immediately understand where to watch the recording, which resources they can download and how long they will retain access.
Payhip and Gumroad can both deliver recordings and supporting files, but they organize the customer experience differently.
Selling a Workshop Replay With Payhip
Payhip gives you two practical ways to package a replay:

Payhip allows creators to choose between a simple digital product and a structured course during setup.Click the image to enlarge.
- Create a digital product when you are selling one recording with a workbook, slide deck or bonus files.
- Create a course product when you want to divide the recording into lessons or add quizzes, assignments, drip content and certificates.
For a basic digital product, Payhip allows multiple files, with each uploaded file supporting a size of up to 5 GB. This can work well for a replay bundle containing a video, PDF workbook, presentation slides and additional downloads.

A simple Payhip replay package could include:
- Workshop recording
- Downloadable workbook
- Presentation slides
- Resource or tool list
- Bonus checklist
- Access and support instructions
Selling a Workshop Replay With Gumroad
Gumroad uses a simpler product-and-content structure. You can add videos and downloadable resources to a single product, then allow customers to access the content through their Gumroad purchase.

Gumroad product options include digital products, courses or tutorials, e-books, memberships and bundles. Click the image to enlarge.
Beyond a single replay, both platforms support additional product formats. Payhip also offers memberships, physical products, coaching services and bundles, while Gumroad provides dedicated options for e-books, memberships and bundles. These formats may become useful if a replay later develops into a recurring content library, coaching offer or multi-workshop package.
Videos can be offered as downloads or made available for streaming without exposing a standard download button. This is useful when you want customers to watch the replay online while still allowing them to download supporting PDFs.
Gumroad works well for a straightforward replay bundle, but its course tools provide less native structure for quizzes, assessments and student progress than Payhip’s course product.
A simple Gumroad replay package could include:
- Streaming-only workshop video
- Downloadable workbook and slides
- Written viewing instructions
- Bonus resource links
- Future updates sent to buyers

Delivery verdict: Choose Payhip if the workshop needs a more organized learning experience or may become a mini-course later. Choose Gumroad if you want to place the recording and supporting files inside one simple product with minimal setup.
Taxes and Seller Responsibilities
Tax responsibility is the area where these platforms differ most sharply.
Gumroad: Merchant of Record
Gumroad has acted as Merchant of Record since January 1, 2025. In that role, Gumroad states that it manages indirect tax collection and remittance for sales made through the platform worldwide.
For a creator selling internationally, this can remove a substantial administrative burden. It does not eliminate every business-income, accounting or filing obligation you may have, but it changes who is responsible for the customer transaction and indirect sales tax.
Payhip: automated coverage, but not a global Merchant of Record
Payhip automatically handles digital EU and UK VAT by default. It also states that it collects and remits applicable US sales tax as a marketplace facilitator from July 1, 2026.
This is broad and useful automation, but it is not the same as Gumroad’s worldwide Merchant of Record model. Depending on where you and your buyers are located, seller responsibilities may remain for other taxes, registrations or filings.
If international tax administration is central to the decision, ask a qualified tax professional which model fits your business. Creator Tool Lab does not provide tax or legal advice.
Email follow-up and customer communication
Gumroad documents native workflows that can send scheduled messages after a purchase, to subscribers or after other customer events. This makes it possible to deliver a replay reminder, request feedback or promote a related product without immediately adding a separate email platform.
There is an important limitation for a new account: Gumroad says sellers cannot send email broadcasts or workflows until they have earned at least $100 after fees and received a payout. Messages are also sent from a Gumroad email address rather than your own domain.
Payhip handles essential order and access emails, and it can connect with external mailing tools. For a simple replay, that may be enough. For a longer welcome or upsell sequence, plan to connect an email service or use a broader platform such as Systeme.io.
Choose Gumroad for convenient native follow-up after the account becomes eligible. Choose Payhip if keeping the store and email stack modular is more important.
Product protection
No platform can stop every buyer from copying a screen or sharing access. The useful question is whether the platform adds reasonable friction.
Payhip provides:
- Download limits that can be adjusted by the seller.
- PDF stamping for eligible PDF files.
- A course area for content that should not be delivered as a raw file.
Gumroad provides:
- Unique download links and checks for unusual download behavior.
- Streaming-only video access.
- PDF stamping.
For a high-value workshop, protected streaming can add useful friction compared with handing every buyer the original video file. Gumroad makes that simpler for a single recording; Payhip makes more sense when the protected experience will become a course. Neither option can prevent screen recording completely.
Storefront, branding and growth
Payhip is the better option if you want the store to grow around the workshop. It supports digital downloads, courses, coaching, memberships and bundles from one storefront. The same product can begin as a replay and later gain lessons, resources or a subscription offer.
Gumroad is effective when the product itself is the destination. Product pages are quick to launch and the customer already understands the Gumroad checkout and Library. But the seller has less control over turning the storefront into a distinct learning brand.
Ask one question before choosing:
Is this replay a one-off product, or the first item in a larger education business?
For a one-off streaming product, Gumroad is competitive. For the first item in a growing catalog, Payhip is usually the better foundation.
Who should choose Payhip?
Payhip is the stronger choice when you:
- Are validating a first workshop replay and want the lowest platform fee.
- Expect most sales to come through your own website or email list.
- Want the store to use your branding and domain.
- Need to combine a replay with PDFs, templates or bonus downloads.
- May divide the workshop into lessons or add a certificate later.
- Are comfortable confirming any tax duties not covered by Payhip.
Do not choose Payhip if you need one company to act as Merchant of Record for indirect-tax administration across all supported countries, or if you want native protected video streaming without using a course product, a video-hosting subscription or an external host.
If that describes your product, view Payhip’s current plans.
Who should choose Gumroad?
Gumroad is the stronger choice when you:
- Want to upload one video and offer protected streaming quickly.
- Prefer a simple product page over a customized course storefront.
- Want a platform acting as Merchant of Record for indirect tax worldwide.
- Value native email workflows and a built-in buyer Library.
- Accept the higher fee as the price of administrative convenience.
Do not choose Gumroad if margins on lower-priced products are tight, you want a strongly branded storefront, or you need quizzes, assignments and completion certificates inside a structured learning product.
Use Gumroad’s official pricing page to confirm current fees before publishing your checkout link.
Who should choose neither?
Neither platform is ideal for every workshop business.
Consider a different setup when you need:
- Advanced funnels, lead magnets and multi-step email automation in one system.
- Live cohorts with detailed learner management.
- Complex quizzes, graded assessments or corporate reporting.
- A large school with many instructors and administrator roles.
- A polished community as the core product rather than an add-on.
For funnel-first selling, Systeme.io may fit better. For a broad comparison, return to our guide to selling workshop recordings and mini-courses.
Final verdict
For most independent creators selling their first workshop replay, Payhip wins on cost, branding and growth flexibility. It is the better place to validate a $29–$99 product without paying a monthly platform fee, and it gives you a clearer path from replay to mini-course.
Gumroad wins on convenience when the product is a single streamed video and worldwide indirect-tax handling is a priority. Its Merchant of Record model is a genuine advantage, not a minor checkbox, and it may justify the higher direct-sale fee for an international seller.
Use this final rule:
- Choose Payhip for lower-cost testing and a product that may grow.
- Choose Gumroad for the simplest streaming-plus-tax-administration package.
Frequently asked questions
Is Payhip cheaper than Gumroad?
For direct sales, Payhip is usually cheaper, but compare the complete charge. Payhip Free charges 5% plus the seller’s Stripe or PayPal processing fee. Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 for direct/profile sales and does not list an additional processor fee on its current pricing page. Gumroad also includes Merchant of Record administration, so the headline percentage is not the only factor.
Can I stream a workshop replay on Payhip?
Yes, if you use a course or membership product with Payhip’s native video-hosting subscription, or embed video hosted with a supported external provider. If you sell the replay as a basic digital product, the buyer receives a downloadable file.
Can I prevent Gumroad buyers from downloading the video?
Yes. Gumroad provides a streaming-only setting for video products. This prevents the original video download, although no platform can prevent screen recording completely.
Which platform is better for a mini-course?
Payhip is generally better for a mini-course because its course product supports lessons, drip scheduling, quizzes, assignments and certificates. Gumroad is better suited to a simpler video or digital-product structure.
Does Payhip handle sales tax?
Payhip automatically handles digital EU and UK VAT and states that it collects and remits applicable US sales tax. It is not a worldwide Merchant of Record, so seller responsibility may remain in other jurisdictions or for certain filings.
Does Gumroad handle VAT and sales tax?
Gumroad says it acts as Merchant of Record and handles indirect tax collection and remittance worldwide. Sellers may still have their own income-tax, accounting or business obligations.
Can I move from Payhip or Gumroad later?
Yes, but product files, customer access and email history do not automatically migrate perfectly between systems. Keep your original files, maintain a lawful customer list and avoid building a workflow that depends on one platform feature unless it provides clear value.
